Vietfish 2016 to open in HCM City

HCM CITY – Around 200 seafood exporters and processors from Việt Nam and 14 foreign countries and territories will gather at the biggest event of the industry – Vietfish 2016 -- which will be held in HCM City from August 3 to August 5.

Organised by the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP), this is the 17th consecutive year that Vietfish has been oragnised to connect domestic seafood producers and processors with foreign ones.

Under the theme of “Asia’s Home Seafood,” the exhibition this year will home 350 booths set up by companies from Việt Nam, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Germany, Japan, the US, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Along with offering a series of co-operation opportunities for companies, Vietfish 2016 will give customers chances to try special and delicious seafood dishes made from tra fish, shrimp, tuna, cuttlefish and octopus.

During three days of the exhibition, many conferences will be organised to discuss urgent issues relating to seafood certificates and technology application.

Thanks to that, companies can study the most advanced technologies as well as new trends in the world seafood market, which is promising to help them upgrade their production and strengthen business as well.

Stable development targeted

In the 1990s, the Vietnamese seafood industry did its first steps with several State-owned companies, which earned an export turnover of only US$30 million.

Twenty years later, the figure jumped by 26 times, reaching $8 billion in 2014. By that time, over 600 processing companies had been established using the most advanced technology in the world.

The industry has reached an average growth of 30 per cent per year. This is a miraculous growth that not all industries are able to reach.

In a short period, the country is ranked third in the list of biggest seafood producers in the world, following China and India. In terms of exports, it is listed fourth after China, Norway and Thailand.

Currently, Vietnamese is among the biggest tra/basa fish and shrimp suppliers in the world. It is also an ideal destination for seafood companies as it can meet demands from all markets, such as cuttlefish, tuna and other fishes. This would also help importers save time and money.

Thanks to the potential of the industry, with product diversification and high volume, seafood processing and exporting has become a key part of the Vietnamese economy. It is a leading sector in integration and taking advantage of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and free trade agreements that Việt Nam has signed with countries.

This year, VASEP predicts that total export turnover will reach over $7 billion, up 6.3 per cent over 2015.
